Can I age my own Scotch?

Say I wanted to purchase 5 bottles of modestly priced younger single malt scotch. What brand can be stashed under a cabinate and keept for years aging to a decent price and exquisite taste. Say I wanted to save one for when I am a best man, one for a child's wedding, and retierment (etc). Anyone try this? Any tips? Anyone have any credentials on the subject (I would hate to take bad advice and wast an invesment). Thanks.

Don't use Scotch as an investment. Your money will be better spent on buying the respectively aged spirit at the time you want it. If nothing else, take the money you'd put towards the Scotch and put it in a fund and then use the appreciation towards that rare Scotch when the time comes...you'll have a much better Scotch on your hands with much more reliable quality.

Spirits age/mature in oak barrels. It's the chemical reaction between the spirit, oxygen, and the wood of the barrel that does the aging, not just time. To do it at home, you'd have to put your young Scotch back into a barrel...then you have the expense of the barrel (and hoping you got one of the proper quality) on top of evaporation (they're not air-tight) on top of the storage space. To further complicate things, there is an optimum time spent in the barrel...and this varies from spirit to spirit and from barrel to barrel. That's why there are expert tasters at distilleries...to find out when each barrel has hit its perfect time and maturity. Older does not at all imply better (though it *can*). Also, in the span of maybe 10-15 years, each barrel will lose to evaporation and sampling way more than the equivalent of 5 bottles...this is referred to as "the angels' share."
Bottom line: Not worth it!
