What is proper dress etiquette for religious sites in Poland?

Is it considered inappropriate or offensive to attend a Catholic Mass or a religious shrine such as Czestochowa in casual clothing? What would be appropriate dress for a man? Are neckties expected in churches? Would athletic shoes be frowned upon? I am planning an autumn visit. I am accustomed to very casual dress practices in the USA. I would like to respect Polish customs and blend in as well as possible.

A shirt, a sweater, even a T-shirt are acceptable; sleeveless shirts are excluded. Any kind of trousers would do, if neat and clean. Long trousers, of course. Formal attire is not necessary, unless it is a funeral or a marriage ceremony.
